Ornamentation which Is the Core – Six Perspectives on the Relationship between Ornamentation and Meaning

Lecturer: Prof Aryeh Hirschfeld

Inspired by the Contemporary Arabesque exhibition currently on display at the museum, Prof Aryeh Hirschfeld will present a special lecture on the subject of Ornamentation which Is the Core – Six Perspectives on the Relationship between Ornamentation and Meaning

The lecture will examine a number of examples of painting, poetry, music and architecture, and will attempt to interpret the status and meaning of the ornamentation they incorporate. The examples are taken from works by Rossini, Oum Koulthum, Bernini, Ibn Ezra, Klimt and Bilibin.

Prof Aryeh Hirschfeld is a cultural and literary critic, essayist and Hebrew literature researcher. He is also a full professor in the Department of Hebrew Literature, at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. In 2008 he was awarded the Prime Minister’s Prize for Hebrew Writers.
