Mount Ararat as the birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll

Closing performance: Shoom band.

Shoom, “garlic” in Hebrew, is a musical encounter between a player of Armenian wind instruments and a rock-band drum-and-bass duo. In their musical “kitchen,” they produce exotic offerings from a mix of “ingredients” you’d never think belong together: touching melodies from the mountains of Armenia, wild Hassidic dances, drum-and-bass pieces, alternative rock. But with a touch of “shoom,” everything goes.

The band:

Ilia Mazia, duduk and flutes

Sergey Engel, bass

Anatoliy Magdalinsky, drums
